My lil Pieces

Another entry for the record books.

Amazing is going to be hard for me to describe in words.

I am going to do my best to try, it went by so fast.  This birthday weekend was part of the surprise I ruined at Valentines Day. Whaaa waaaa…. That is all behind us now. Friday March 4th I left work at 3:18 sharp. Met J at The “Cottage” it has transitioned from being The “Cave” now to The “Cottage”. I think this has something to do with the fact we have been redecorating it. Anyhow, we packed up and headed out to The Country. My Country, the core of who I am and what had a huge part in making me the person I have become. This is where I spent 18 years of my life and 6 of those years I worked at First Monday. I was kind of excited to bring him in to it, but with a little more style than I had while growing up.

It was a pretty flawless drive, interstate 30, to highway 80 on to freeway 20 and ending on county road 198! Okay, the prefixes for the roads taken aren’t necessarily correct, but I couldn’t resist. We drove down Plum Lake and to our Cabin. It was better than anticipated. It couldn’t have been more perfect. We were both famished, but opted to wait on our scallops and kabobs that we had planned to cook on the grill. So, this was the first order of business. We arrived just before sunset and had to make sure and capture the essence of dusk to dark. Jason took some great pictures.

It was time to get the party started. We got some good ole MJ, Pink, Norah Jones and a few others cranked up on the radio, cocktails poured, snack tray out and grill on fire. There was a book that I found as soon as we walked in the cabin that was a journal of people’s experiences in Cabin #2. I wished I would have had enough time to read the whole darn thing, but cherished the stories that I did get to and certainly made a few post myself.  Some of the stories were so sad and I could feel the tears through the words. I found myself wondering how this little piece of heaven couldn’t cure them of the love lost. On a lighter note, we had an amazing dinner, relaxing in the hot tub was beyond amazing, popped open some bubble, most importantly J blew out his birthday candle and hopefully made a fantastic wish. I can’t imagine how much fun this year is going to be since we had just a great one last year. We couldn’t stay up too late; we had a big day ahead of us.

J-Here I can open that for you. Just a lil tug.
J-No, No I can get it. Give me just a second.
J-Shew, see I told you I could get it!
J-Now lets try this out, not bad, not bad at all.

We started with yummy breakfast, gourmet coffees, a sinful morning snack, shared a so so lunch and had a terrible dinner. HA, it just went from great to worse. We were striking out left and right on this day of food. We managed to find humor in it and learned the true pros of sharing meals. Dinner at the winery was an experience to say the least. The wine was awesome and I even purchased three or four bottles. The food on the other hand was, well, I don’t know really how to describe it. I think we will just leave it at that.

It was a long chilly day and we were ready to get back to our cozy cabin. We managed to put in a good seven miles, spend a couple hundred bucks and eat a variety of foods. That makes a day well spent. However, when I think it just can’t get any better it does. Since the cold front swept in that meant we would want a fire. Awe man, I just now realized in this very instant that we didn’t get a picture of the place of fire. Anyhow, the fire was awesome and letting your muscles take a beating from the jets after a strenuous day is something everyone should have the luxury of experiencing on a daily basis, if I do say so myself.

Sunday was upon us and we used the last few hours we had wisely. Sleeping and taking pictures that are here for your viewing pleasure! There really isn’t any coffee in these mugs. You had no idea I was such a creative photo op planner, did you? We were sad to say good-bye and maybe we will be back someday. Per the book it seems as though a lot of people come back to this place. We made our way down to Canton square for some lunch and then to cover as much of the grounds as we could before closing time. On our way home we stopped for some Cajun food and cold beers. It was delish and a great way to end this adventure.

I had no idea J was focusing on the photo prop!

I know you are thinking wow; she did such a great job at planning him the best birthday weekend ever. (I kid I kid)  Jason made my birthday so special and I had no idea how I could ever “re-pay” him for it. As a child I always felt bad when it was my birthday, because it was at the end of the month and my mom never had money to do anything for it. I felt sad mainly because I didn’t want her to feel bad. In my early years of college I had a realization that birthdays are a joyous occasion. It is the one day a year that is all yours, well and everyone else that shares the same birth date! Regardless it is the day you were born and that should be celebrated. I have been celebrating every since, I think everyone else should as well. Sometimes I look back over my photos and I have 100’s of birthday pictures and I giggle. I laugh at the fact of how many birthday parties I have been to, how terrible I feel for the ones I miss and thankful for the ones that I made happen when they didn’t want to have one. I feel like I did do an okay job on the weekend plans. This was his first time “full” experience of Canton and it made me feel good knowing that something that was such a big part of my youth was also something that he enjoyed.

or so J says!

“Cheers to you, Cheers to me, Friends forever we shall be, If you should ever F*#& me then F you and Cheers to me!”

Green is good

March is making me smile. Something about the spring that awakens my inner self. I think it is because I have so much Irish in me. I know I know everyone is some sort of Irish come around March time. I really am, Google Burkley. Speaking of, have you ever Googled or researched your last name? I did and found some rather interesting things out about Burkley. It is finally getting darker later, so I can enjoy more daylight.  There is nothing more depressing to me than getting off work, going home and it is dark outside. Time change is around the corner.

I am already planning away our summer and getting ready to get moving on the vacation to come. I have become addicted to getting involved in the community and finding all sorts of different things to do. I am so thankful that Jason is a trooper and doesn’t mind going with me. He has even found himself really enjoying some of the things we have done.

I am not sure which event started the trend, but I knew I better start writing about them before they all got ahead of me. Jason signed us for the Dash Down Greenville 5K. I have always wanted to do this, so I got very excited. I started looking at the website and found out that they were also hosting “fun runs” each week to help motivate people to get ready for the March 12th DDG. They have themes that go with the weekly runs as well. I have enjoyed this tremendously. The first few weeks were canceled due to the bad weather.

Our first one was the Red Light Run. Wear red if you are taken, yellow if it is complicated and green if you are single. FREE EVENT

The second week was a Prediction Run. We just had to predict how long it was going to take us to complete our run. I predicted 27 minutes, Jason 28 and our actual time was 28:40. It was funny how wore out we were. We felt like we went so fast. It is hard for me to remember what it was like to run that in 13 minutes back in my cross country days and him in his army time. Youth is such a beautiful thing. FREE EVENT

Third week was Mardi Gras Run. This was great practice for getting us ready to be able to wear stuff while running. Jason wasn’t feeling well, so we didn’t push ourselves. It was kind of nice just enjoying the walk/jog/run. Next week will be the last one and hopefully we can make some good timing. I will be covered in green in head to toe thanks to J’s mom. FREE EVENT

We made our way over to this restaurant called Smoke at The Belmont Hotel on a school night (this is huge for me) for a FREE event they were hosting to get people to vote for a local Chef Tim Byres. Monica and Meredith joined us. We had some great BBQ, Oysters and Potato Salad. Most importantly he won!
FREE EVENT

I read in one of the local magazines about the Dallas Contemporary Art Museum and how Sour Grapes was going to be on display and we could go see it for FREE. I had seen these artist month’s earlier on the news and have wanted to see the graffiti art they do. We had so much fun taking pictures and looking at everything.
FREE EVENT

These Free events are turning out pretty swell. I also found out about Penguin Days at the Dallas Zoo. We could go for 5.00 a piece instead of 15.00. It was crazy crowded and maybe we should have taken as many pictures of the people as we did the animals. They were kind of one in the same. It was beautiful weather and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. More than 1/2 Price Off

We have lots of things added to the list for Spring and Summer. I can’t wait to see and share all of them. Here are just a few!
The Dallas Arboretum ( I have never been )
The Dallas Museum of Art (J has a school project)
      Warrior Dash (3.24 hellish miles)
Texas Theater (My first independent film – TY Groupon)
Chelsea Handler Comedy show (Verizon Thearter)

Personal Note: The past few months have handed me a lot of heartache and a few hills have now managed to grow in to mountains. I know I am not remotely close to getting to the top, but I do know there are a few more philosophies I have acquired to help me get there.

As morbid as it may sound I have learned that when people say negative things to me or act out in a manner that causes me to question who I am as a person I say to myself…. How many people will be at their funeral and or wedding compared to mine? If I can clearly see there will be many more at mine than there’s; I instantly flush out any questioning of who I am.
I have learned that it is vital to care less about things that you can’t change. Getting all upset/angry/frustrated is only going to bring you down.

I solely focus on being happy and taking every day to the fullest and the fullest being what I choose it to be. I make sure I am completely okay if it was my last day on this earth and firmly believing that life is too short to not spend it being happy.

Flower Shop

Jason and I offered to help out at the flower shop this past weekend since they were extra busy preparing for Valentine’s Day. My great aunt owned a flower shop in Canton when I was a little girl. I had found memories of my visits there especially during homecoming season. There is nothing like that first moment you walk in one of those huge refrigerator like closets that are holding all the delicacies. It is something I will never forget. It is cold, but you are mesmerized from all the beautiful colors and so engulfed by the pleasant aroma you can’t help but ignore the draft, hold your arms, sniff and smile. Now that I think about it after my first walk in to one of those smell goods I never past up the opportunity to open the doors at the grocery stores to take a quick whiff and feel the chill on my face through my adolescences. Needless to say I have been looking forward to this weekend for some time now.

Anyhow, back to this past weekend. We worked on Saturday delivering flowers, (which is something I have never done) Sunday was delivering and helping where help needed to be. As soon as I took my first steps in the front door of the flowers shop on that Saturday morning I was pleasantly surprised with the potent smell of flowers. It was greatness and instantly made me smile. I thought to myself, I must find out where the life size refrigerator is located? They must have one and boy I sure do I hope I get to step inside of it. Yes, I am that juvenile. I made sure to take in a few extra deep breathes to savory the smells. I closed my eyes while doing so and imagined starting every work day off with this pleasantry. I wondered if the employees even notice the sweetness in the air. It brings the true meaning of stop and smell the roses to play. It is easy to get caught up in our everyday lives that we forget to do that. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they didn’t notice it and it certainly didn’t bother me at all when I spoke out in a higher tone after walking in about how wonderful that smell was. Considering I had not even met the majority of these people yet, they probably thought I was little strange, but I couldn’t refrain from vocalizing on the pleasant scent I was taking in.

Saturday, we were given our route, checked off our bouquets of flowers and pots of planted orchids as they were being arranged. I had no idea they do the orders on the morning of. We snuggled them in crates and boxes before loading them up in the car and then we were off. We stopped at some gorgeous homes. Seeing them from afar while driving by in your car and actually walking up to the doorstep and ringing the door bell gives you two completely different experiences. People were friendly and I was having fun. I think Jason was having fun with watching me light up. He has done this many times before and he didn’t really understand why I was so excited about it. The flower shop is owned by family friends of his and that is how we got involved in doing this in the first place. Each delivery was like a new adventure. I had to look at each one before I handed it over. I wanted to see exactly what they were getting. I would have taken pictures, so I could show you, but they had big bows and wrapping on them as well. We went to private hospital rooms, hotels, retirement homes, duplexes and homes that could qualify as mansions.

I will say orchids were the biggest pain and I just didn’t really enjoy delivering those. There were such a variety of deliveries as well, but no matter what size or make they were beautiful and smelt lovely. The flower shop does an amazing job. Doing delivery work is tiresome. I have new respect for any delivery person, but hope they can find the fun in the job as well. I know it is always different when you are doing a job because you want to and it isn’t something you have to do. Either way the encounters that come with delivering can be very humorous. There are the animals, butlers, hospital patients, birthday’s,  new parents, newlyweds, ladies in a towel with only one free hand and gosh love em you can’t forget the senior citizens. I was disappointed when they weren’t home. I didn’t get to see their face when the bundle of beauty was being handed over, but guess you can’t win them all. We did two routes on Saturday and I was exhausted.

Sunday, I thought the arrangements were much bigger than Saturdays. I couldn’t believe the size of some of them. We only did one run of deliveries on Sunday and then spent the rest of the day at the shop. I enjoyed this tremendously. At first I was standing in a corner trying to stay out of the way and taking it all in. There were tons and tons of buckets and vases filled with water just waiting to be filled with all sorts of flowers. Even the water just seems to be fresher. There were all kinds of squarely water hoses that I had never seen before. Everyone had a different job and they were all running around like a swarm of bees preparing for the big day. I got to see flowers being “checked” in that was delivered from places like Holland. I helped unload and placed them in to buckets of water.  I got to take a peek in the humongous fridge and took a quick smell. I watched the worker’s at the table’s putting flowers together in the arrangements and then observed the ladies that were packaging them up to be delivered. It was amazing to see the routine of everyone and watch it unfold. I sat back in the office and did some mapscoing for the drivers to utilize on Monday while doing the deliveries. I have never touched a mapsco before, so this was fun to learn. Learning is fun, right?!? Since I was fortunate enough to be able to observe things as they happened. I got to see a lot off the workers personalities. Since I love to people watch this was extremely entertaining. The eyes rolling, the jokes being made, the shrug of the shoulders, the sigh of relief, the disgruntle growl, the smile of accomplishment, the scrunch of frustration, the ease of teamwork and most importantly the laughter. This was obviously a high stress time and weekend, so I can see how everyone may have not been at there best.

I may or may not help out next year, either way I will take the experience with me for a lifetime. I think there could certainly be a reality T.V. show made out of working in a flower shop especially with the right people. Jason went to help them with more deliveries on Valentine’s Day. He saved mine for the last stop. =-) So, I do have one of the beautiful arrangements to show you. I just wished I could add the scent with it. I can’t wait to get home and open up my door and get a whiff. I can say for certainty that I will have some flowers in my yard when I get one. You should always take the time to stop and smell the roses.

The Holiday for Hallmark

Yay for L-O-V-E

I must admit I am pretty proud of myself for being somewhat creative for my Valentine. However, I am not so proud of myself for spilling the beans a week early. This is what happens when you go to dinner with your Cupid, have an amazing entree, a lot of interesting conversations and a few drinks. I am just terrible at waiting. I have had the idea for a few months, been working on it for a few weeks, told anyone and everyone that probably didn't care to hear about it. Once it was completed I just wanted to give it to him. After all he is my best friend and the first person I share everything with. At least I didn’t give it ALL away, right?

I did a little countdown of surprises for him starting on the 1st and leading up to the 14th day of February. Each day was strategically planned. I meticulously placed each day in a different envelope and each gift with a specialized message pertaining to what the daily surprise would be.

Day
1.   A mystery card that had a little sexy note on it (compliments of cosmo).
2.   I got him some personalized m&m’s that were green, blue, yellow and said J+K=4 Ever, Jase Rocks (everyone in his family calls him Jase), 5/17/2010 (which is the day we met) and good ole cheesy My heart Skips 4U. I also bought the traditional m&m candy machine to put them in, so he could place on his desk to enjoy.
3.   I decided that I must incorporate some sort of go green. It just wouldn't be me if I didn't. I arranged for an e-card to be sent his way. A little hoopsandyoyo, they are my all time favorite. http://www.hallmark.com/online/hoopsandyoyo/
4.   Was another flirty card from Cosmo. I have been saving these cards forever. They were well worth the wait.
5.   Cosmo card – These were all adult friendly cards.
6.   I sat down, grabbed some stationary from my youth, got a fun pen and poured out my heart writing none other than a good old fashioned love letter. I did not hold back or contemplate what I wanted to say. If I have thought it then I wrote it.
7.   Jason loves him some coffee, so I got him a gift card to Starbucks.
8.   I did some research, found a lot of fun filled facts about Valentines day, cards, chocolates, cupid and so forth. I printed them out on some pretty pink paper in some awesome purple print. (purples almost my favorite color)
9.   I got three packages of these little cards. There were a total of 36 and I wrote on the outside of every envelope I love the way you… and on the inside I wrote a personalized message on each card for him to have to open whenever he wanted to. I printed out a couple of cute pics of me with him and his nieces, folded it up and placed it on the inside of the clear glass bowl that was holding all the cards for him.
10.  Was my Valentine’s Day card to him, asking him to stay with me on Sunday the 13th night, so we   could go to breakfast before work and school on the 14th. Since this is something we have not done before.
11.  Was the last and 4th card of the Cosmo set.
12.  I typed up the itinerary for him with all the information he would need for our double date outing I had planned. We are going to Bishop’s Art District for dinner with The Whitlow's (they just got MARRIED) and then we are all going to see a play at Theater Too.

13.  I was ever so clever and got him some scratch off tickets stating that I am glad I took a gamble with him. He won 90.00 on the 20.00 worth of scratch off’s I purchased!!!
14.  This is the one and only gift I didn’t really let him open and it was the old fashioned sweet heart candies, with a little card and then going to breakfast. It just wouldn't be Valentines without those candies. Reality was that we weren't really hungry and opted for coffee from The Cave (aka my apt) and some extra rest time.

I think he was really surprised and okay that I asked him to open the 13 envelopes on January the 26th after dinner that night. It is a funny story to share with others. I also let him know all about his birthday surprise on this night as well. HA!!  We still had fun pretending like everyday was the first day of the envelopes opening. The double date was awesome. We really enjoyed hanging out with the Newlyweds. The Theater had a pleasant surprise of roses, chocolates and champagne during intermission. I just don't think it could have been any better. He did an awesome job and got me a perfume set, a heart shaped cupcake/muffin maker, the most adorable cookie jar ever (even if it did come from TARGET-I have a small strike against this place), a beautiful ring/earring set from James Avery, some lottery tickets(I only won 2.00) and three awesome cards.

We are going to have dinner with his family tonight, he will be in charge of next year, so I can't bust the gut and there will be a surprise. This is a wrap for Valentines 2011.
